Fruit Recipes For a Food Dehydrator

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Fruit Recipes

#1.  Granola Bars

5 cups toasted granola

1 cup instant powdered milk

1/2 cup wheat germ

1/2 bran

1/2 flour (whole wheat)

1/2 cup orange juice

1 cup honey

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup olive oil

1/2 cup raisins (optional)

*Notes:  First you’ll want to find a large sauce pan, this is where you’ll be doing all of your mixing at.  You have to first warm the oil up with the peanut butter and honey in your pan on a low heat.  Then dump all of your remaining ingredients and blend thoroughly.  If needed you can add more water to make the ingredients stick together better.  You’ll want to add a little extra water if you decided to add in the raisins.  The mixture should be firm but sticky.  Cover a dehydrator tray with wax paper and roll the mix out on top of it.

Dry the mixture overnight, resting on the wax paper.

Then turn the mixture over onto the tray so the other side faces up but still on top of waxed paper.  Then put tray with hardened mixture into the food dehydrator for 3-6 hours.  After 3-6 hours pull the tray with the hardened fruit and granola mixture out and cut into squares or bars.

Then place back into the dehydrator for another 6-7 hours until completely dried.  Fills about 2 trays.

How to Buy A Food Dehydrator

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Food Dehydrator Buying Tips and Uses
By Michael S. Brown

How do you buy a food dehydrator? What are watts on a food dehydrator? More importantly, why own a food dehydrator? Well in this article you’ll learn a little more about all 3 questions and why they are important and why you should consider owning a food dehydrator.

When looking to select a food dehydrator don’t over spend and never buy a enormous food dehydrator unit if you are not going to use it. Buy the size you need most of the time people buy a food dehydrator that is either too cheap or too expensive and both can be equally as bad. If you buy a really expensive food dehydrator thinking its going to be the best it may not suit your needs. Or if you buy one too cheap thinking its more economical it may not have enough power to do what you want or even dry the food all the way.

A food dehydrators power is measured in wattage and you can think of this much like a light bulb. If you have a 100 watt light bulb that is bright right? However how bright would a 100 watt bulb be in a 2000 sq foot area? It’d still be bright but wouldn’t fill the whole area. So if you buy a food dehydrator with a 20 tray capacity and you use all 20 trays and fill them up and you have 500 watts of power it may not dry it all the way through. Rather you should focus on smaller batches of maybe 8-10 trays total dehydrating at the same time. My favorite type of food dehydrator is probably a 1000 watt dehydrator that can be expanded up to 20 trays. Again I’d never use all 20 trays at once for the fact it doesn’t dehydrate as well. On the opposite end of the spectrum if you buy a 1000 watt food dehydrator and you only use 2 trays in it it might over dehydrate and that you do not want either. If ever in doubt shoot for 1000 watts and 10 trays to keep it at a happy medium.

Avoid mixing too many different kinds of items in the same batch of a food dehydrator. If you have to many different things that dehydrate at different levels you can end up with some items over dehydrated and some under and having under dehydrated food leaves the chance the food could develop bacteria which could give you on afternoon in the bathroom. So owning a food dehydrator and having the right one is as important as using the food dehydrator correctly.

If you are questioning why you should even own a food dehydrator here are a few reasons to ponder. If you like to buy dried fruits or meats you know they can be expensive. However drying them and dehydrating them yourself can save quite a bit of money and that alone will quickly pay for the $60-$100 you could spend on one. Another great thing with a food dehydrator is drying and curing meats. If you like dried and dehydrated meat this is great. Again money comes into play here as a 1lb bag of store bought jerky goes for about 5 dollars or more. You could easily make 2 lbs or more for the same price yourself. Another great thing about a food dehydrator is that you can make your own snacks with as little or as much salt and sugar as you’d like and you know exactly what is in your food. These tips may just help you the next time you decide to buy a food dehydrator or when you are doing your next batch of dehydrated food.

How to Compare Food Dehydrators

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Food Dehydrator Comparisons
By Michael S. Brown

When buying a food dehydrator you want to be able to get your full moneys worth out of it. A Food Dehydrator can be easy to use and you only need to know a few things about them. If you are looking to buy a new food dehydrator and even looking to upgrade your current one continue reading on and you may learn a few important tips that will help you find the right food dehydrator for you.

Buying and using a food dehydrator are both actually quite simple but you’ll need to keep a few things in mind. Make sure you buy a dehydrator with enough storage space and enough storage racks for want you want to do. Wattage is not always important unless you are trying to dehydrate a very large dehydrator space with very low wattage then you may run into the food not drying completely which could cause bacteria to grow in the food if not consumed quickly enough. I prefer about 500 watts with a 4-12 tray capacity because it just does the job right. You may want a larger size just make sure you go up a little higher in watts if you go larger than 12 trays. Most food dehydrators are going to be powerful enough for what you want to do as they’ve been tested time and time again before being released.

Set your spending limit when buying a new food dehydrator. In all honesty unless you are going to be doing huge batches of dried food daily you’ll probably be able to find a good dehydrator for what you need at or under $100. Thats good news because it will quickly pay for itself. As with most products however do not over spend for features or items that you won’t use. If you know you’re only going to use it once a month to make a small batch of beef jerky then save yourself some money and buy the 4 tray 300 watt dehydrator instead of the 15 tray 600 watt food dehydrator that will cost you alot more. Remember buying a food dehydrator helps you save money so just get the one that is in your price range for what you need to do.

Consider buying two smaller dehydrators rather than one large dehydrator. One thing that I like to do is dehydrate vegetables and meats. I would recommend not doing both together though as they need to be set to different times and temperatures to fully dry. One solution to this is to buy two smaller dehydrators one for meats and one for the vegetables. This comes in handy also during the holidays for drying different products for baking and cooking at different times and temperatures. After a quick clean up and storing the first item i can rotate production so something is always dehydrating. So if you are buying a new food dehydrator remember these things to help save you time and most and be the most cost effective.
